The Deadliest Aviation Disaster

The Tenerife airport disaster, also known as the Tenerife crash, occurred on March 27, 1977, at LosRodeos Airport (now known as Tenerife North Airport) in the Canary Islands, Spain. It remains the deadliest aviation accident in history.
The disaster involved two Boeing 747 aircraft: KLM Flight 4805 and Pan Am Flight 1736. Due to a combination of factors including heavy fog, miscommunication, and pilot error, the two aircraft collided on the runway. The KLM plane, attempting to take off without clearance, collided with the Pan Am plane, which was taxiing on the same runway.
The collision resulted in the deaths of all 248 passengers and crew aboard the KLM aircraft and 335 passengers and crew aboard the Pan Am aircraft, making a total of 583 fatalities. There were only 61 survivors, all of whom were from the Pan Am plane.

The Tenerife airport disaster led to significant changes in aviation regulations and procedures to prevent similar accidents in the future. It highlighted the importance of effective communication, crew coordination, and improved air traffic control systems to enhance safety in the aviation industry.
